Why Unakuruwa Is Sri Lanka’s Hidden Gem for Yoga, Surf, and Slow Living
Tucked between Tangalle and Hiriketiya, the small coastal village of Unakuruwa is one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets. With quiet beaches, gentle waves, and jungle-fringed coves, it offers a peaceful alternative to the island’s busier surf towns — the perfect place to slow down, reconnect, and breathe. And it’s home to Into The Blue, our boutique eco-stay surrounded by palms and turquoise waters.
For travellers seeking yoga, surf, nature, and authentic island life, Unakuruwa is a rare gem on the south coast. Here’s why more and more mindful travellers are choosing this serene corner of Sri Lanka.
1. A Calm, Unspoiled Beach Town
Unakuruwa is known for its raw, natural beauty — coconut palms, empty beaches, and the sound of the ocean everywhere you go. Unlike more developed areas, it remains peaceful, welcoming, and deeply connected to local village life.
No crowds.
No noise.
Just nature, birdsong, and the sea.
It’s the ideal setting for those looking to escape the rush and settle into slow, intentional living.
2. Unakuruwa Surf :One of the Best Right-Handers for Beginners and Intermediates
Just a few minutes’ walk from Into the Blue, the Unakuruwa right-hander surf is a favourite among surfers who want a gentle, friendly wave away from the crowds of Weligama or Hiriketiya.
Smooth, clean right-hand wave
Perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers
Quiet lineup
Beautiful reef setting
Ideal from November to April
We work with local surf coaches who understand the reef and conditions better than anyone. Whether you’re catching your first wave or improving your take-off, Unakuruwa is a dream spot to learn.
3. Jungle-Framed Beaches Perfect for Swimming
Within walking distance, you’ll find three stunning coves, including:
• Silence Beach
A quiet, crystal-clear bay with calm water — ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or meditation.
• Unakuruwa Beach
Perfect for surf, ocean dips, and golden-hour walks.
• Ran Lakshmi / Jungle Beach
A small hidden beach tucked between boulders and jungle.
This variety makes Unakuruwa perfect for both active travellers and quiet beach seekers.
4. A Rising Yoga Destination on the South Coast
Unakuruwa is becoming known for its yoga community, thanks to its peaceful environment and natural beauty. At Into the Blue, we offer daily yoga at 8am in our open-air jungle shala, surrounded by palm trees and birdsong.
Whether you’re joining for a single class or planning a longer retreat, the area provides:
Soft ocean breezes
Lush greenery
Natural stillness
Space to breathe, move, and reconnect
It’s a true sanctuary for yoga lovers.
5. Relaxing Massages at Into The Blue
Whether you need post-surf recovery or want to unwind after a day exploring, our on-site massage therapist offers deeply relaxing treatments in a peaceful garden setting.
It’s one of the easiest ways to drop into slow island living.
6. Authentic Sri Lankan Life & Local Community
Unakuruwa isn’t a resort strip — it’s a real village with a warm community. You’ll find:
Family-run cafés
Fresh coconut stalls
Friendly fishermen
Local curry houses
Hidden temples
Small surf schools
Travellers often say this area feels “real” — untouched, welcoming, and deeply soulful.
7. Easy Access to Tangalle & Hiriketiya
While Unakuruwa feels peaceful and hidden, you’re still close to two of the south coast’s most popular destinations:
Tangalle (5 min): beautiful long beaches, markets, restaurants
Hiriketiya (10–12 min): lively surf bay, cafés, brunch spots
You get the best of both worlds — calm at home, adventure within reach.
How to get to Unakuruwa
Colombo is about 3.5–4.5 hours from Unakuruwa by car, depending on traffic. The easiest and most comfortable option is a private taxi or airport transfer, which takes you directly via the southern expressway and coastal road. A one-way taxi usually costs around €120.
For budget travel, the highway bus is the cheapest option from Colombo to the south (Tangalle/Hambantota direction). It’s reliable but less comfortable and requires a short tuk-tuk ride at the end to reach Unakuruwa.
If you have more time, you can also take the train along the south coast, which is a scenic and relaxed option. From the nearest station, you’ll need to continue by tuk-tuk or taxi to reach the village.
From Mirissa, it’s about 1–1.5 hours by tuk-tuk or taxi along the coastal road via Weligama and Tangalle, passing beaches and small fishing villages before arriving in Unakuruwa.
